My experience at the college

Getting into St. Joseph’s College of Commerce was a dream come true for me! College began with the orientation, which consisted of vital information and statistics. It was a much needed bridge between 12th grade and college. The very first week of college saw us engrossed in a major range of activities. The campaigning done for the Council election put us in a festive mood and it was nothing short of wonder for me, watching candidates move about the campus. Although we first years weren’t allowed to vote we were equally eager to know the results!

I look forward to a highly exciting year in college with fests and industrial visits. I am confident these years will make memories that we can hold on to and cherish forever.

A WALK OF LIFE AT JOSEPH’S

St. Joseph’s institutions have shaped my future and made me who I am today. As an entrant from SJPUC I know the pride that comes from saying “I am a Josephite” and it was accentuated more when I was admitted into this prestigious institution. What I like about St. Joseph’s is that the lectures are insightful and the teaching inspires students to study! The infrastructure is state of the art and which makes life here easy and comfortable!

In a nutshell – “Josephite, till I die!”

The first day in SJCC was truly unexpected. We were introduced to the entire system of education, training, co- curricular curriculum and not to forget the dress code.

It was strange for me because people from all over the world were here to make it big. But gradually as the days passed and the auditions for various events started, it became interesting. Dress code was the most discussed topic among students as was discipline. But we slowly moulded ourselves and made lot of friends too!

In josephs culture and values are encouraged. The eye opener was the council elections. It was very colourful and fun-filled. The contestants had very creatively presented themselves!!! The fact that this institution gives importance to Sports is very welcoming! The various facilities such as basketball courts, Gym and spacious parking place makes life easy for the students.
Long live Joseph’s

- Pranjal, 1 BBM 'B'

Like everyone who shared the stage with me, I walked into the campus with mixed emotions. Excitement about a new beginning , curiosity about the years ahead , a little nervousness about the unfamiliar surroundings, sadness over leaving my old friends behind , anxiety about the new rules and many other feelings that I didn’t label but which fitted proportionately into my torso’s height of 173 cm, made me step into SJCC with unparalleled hopes.

With the freshness in the air and crispness in the loud chit-chats, we walked into the auditorium for the orientation. While the big words brought in motivation and inspired us to dream big, the institution didn’t fail to caution us about the responsibilities as well.

And as days flew by, I gelled into the college environment with ease, thanks to the warmth and welcoming nature of the Josephite family. The efficiency with which a simple class election was conducted made me realize why SJCC stood in high standards among Bangaloreans!
The Council election which followed a week later was filled with pomp and enthusiasm. The seamless opportunities , approachable staff and genial students have taught us the most important lesson in a student’s life –- That the path to achieve your goal is as important as the goal itself.

As a fresher, I only hope to see the colours brighten with every passing day. By far, the kick-start has given us enough momentum to change our gears and move on...

I wish all the students who joined in with me a very happy and successful journey of 3 years!

Student Council Elections 2011

“Of the people, by the people, for the people…” – the words from Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address followed by millions could not be more prevalent than the world we live in today.

When people put their ballots in the boxes, they are, by that act, inoculated against the feeling that the form of government is not theirs. They then accept, in some measure that its errors are their errors, its aberrations, their aberrations and that any revolt will be against them. That is why the repercussions of the choices we make today bear much significance on our tomorrow.
St. Joseph’s College of Commerce promotes franchise every academic year and it has been a fond tradition carried down since its inception. One of the highlights of this year’s student council election was the highest voting participation of 97% received by our students in comparison with preceding election years. Behind closed doors, the voting process was conducted in a meticulous and organized manner. Class by class, students cast their vote for whoever they deemed to be most deserving of the different posts and vote by vote, each candidate’s dream came one step closer to reality.

On a Monday morning, all Josephites were welcomed by a colourful campus. Creative and Innovative campaigning exhibited by the candidates awakened all the students whether they were sitting in the college cafeteria or the football field. Not a corner was left untouched by all the exuberance in the air! The rat race towards the finish line could not have been any more close. Thirty one candidates fought for their voice to be heard and only a handful triumphed. There was cut-throat competition for the most prestigious post of the student council - the President. By eighteen votes, Abraham K. Abraham emerged victorious, closely followed by Martin Michael (former Vice-President). Rahul Nixon was elected Vice-President, Shariq Rafeek as the Academic Co-ordinator, Jason Malcus as the Cultural Co-ordinator, Chelston Pinto as the Sports Co-ordinator, Abhimanyu Mani as the Treasurer, Jeremiah Joseph as the General Secretary , Surabhi Bharadwaj as the BBM Co-ordinator and Maria Marilyn as the Ladies’ Secretary .

The elections captured the true Josephite spirit as the candidates who were not successful were immediately embraced by their classmates and supporters.  The elections marked a remarkable beginning to yet another academic year at St. Joseph’s.

Retreat for Catholic Students

On the first Saturday of the academic year, the second and third year Catholic students attended their annual retreat, which started on a lively note with an action song by a choir from St. Peter’s Church. We were then introduced to Fr. Arul, who conducted the retreat.

He gave us fascinating psychological insights into how the period of pregnancy and the early years of a child greatly influence the mental situation and earthly personality of a child. For all those who assumed that we were born with a latent personality that determined how we would react to different impulses emotionally, they were proved wrong. He also told us of how different generations of people, born into different time periods, be it the period of the World Wars, the Cold War and the following years, act differently because of how the times and their environment shapes their mindsets.

After lunch, we found ourselves participating in the action songs eagerly, some of us being picked to perform the same on stage. The retreat ended with a brief period of silent meditation followed by the solemn celebration of Mass. The choir sang enthusiastically and performed skillfully and Fr. Arul’s talk was highly thought provoking and interesting, all contributing to a very productive retreat. Fr. Arul conducted a similar retreat for the first year students on the subsequent Saturday.

Orientation for PG Students

The orientation for MIB and M.Com was held on 27th June. While Fr. Sebastian led the aspiring post graduates in prayer, our Principal Dr. Lily David broadly outlined the students about academic and non academic opportunities and responsibilities and Dr. Stanley D’souza symbolically related the success of a pencil to that of a human. Fr. Joy Fernandes, the Chief Guest for the event then briefed the students about the Jesuit legacy, after which Dr. Nehruzii, the key speaker continued to ignite the minds of the students by telling them how it was the first day for the rest of their lives!

The formal programme then ended with the vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Muktha, the HOD of the PG department and a warm welcome to the Josephite world.

Orientation for Third Year Students

The third year of college is symbolic of a lot of things, the most important of them being the realization that college is coming to an end, and it will soon be time to step out into the real world and experience it for ourselves.

The 7th of June saw the third year students gathered in the auditorium for an orientation session that focused on the campus placements at the end of the year.

Ms. Gayathri Sasi Tampi, the college placement co-ordinator commenced the session by talking about campus placements. She mentioned how important it was for students to maintain a steady and a commendable percentage of marks so as to ensure success in campus placements.  She talked about several graduates from the college who are now respected and valuable employees in many reputed organizations in Bangalore. She expressed her hope that the
current batch of students would go on to maintain that reputation.

Prof. Augustin Amaldas took over and stressed on the importance of all-round development. He stated that while it was important to be academically oriented, it was also important to maintain a perfect balance between academics and extra-curricular activities.

Orientation for Second Year Students

After the lunch hour on the second day of college, we, the second year students shuffled into the auditorium, to begin our orientation with a short prayer. After a brief period of silence we were greeted by Ms. Nirmala Joseph. Thereafter, we were given a series of talks by various teachers. Dr. Lalima Chakaraverty informed us of the various credit courses available to us this academic year. Dr. A.M.Sheela informed us about the college research journal and encouraged us to produce research of  a caliber for the journal. Of course, she didn’t neglect to tell us of the incentive of extra marks on offer if quality research was produced. Ms. Ruqsana Anjum told us about her experience with social work and the charity gaming event she had organized with her students. When looking for beneficiaries to donate the proceeds of the event, she identified the needy students in our college, which prompted her to start a fund for them.

We were introduced to Rev. Dr. Charles Lasrado who told us of the poor, not restricting the word’s use only to the economically weak but stretching its meaning to cover the physically and mentally sick. He told us how their economic condition could affect their mentality and self worth, such that the poor are not just needful of money but respect, love and kindness as well.

We left the auditorium that day with our heads filled with optimism for the year ahead, looking forward to our second year at SJCC.

Orientation for First Year B.Com Students

The new academic year began with an orientation programme for the incoming batch of B.Com students. The new batch was blessed by the Director, Rev. Dr. Stany D’Souza S.J. and was warmly welcomed by the Principal, Dr. Mrs. Lily David. There was a performance by the college acoustic team, which rendered a song.
Our Principal stressed on the aims and objectives of the college, which are academic excellence, social concern and character formation. Prof. Augustin Amaldas briefed the students on important topics such as exams, timings, dress code and attendance. He also introduced the class mentors for the first year students. The students were also made aware of all the fests and events that the college organizes ranging from sports to the cultural arena.

BBM First Year Icebreaker

The ice breaker was a wonderful event conducted by our 3rd years to ‘break the ice’ among the new entrants into St. Joseph’s College of Commerce. It was done with the aim of bringing the students together and giving them a chance to get to know each other. Rebecca Vieyra, the host of the programme, kicked it off with a warm welcome to the excited new students which was succeeded by a prayer song by the acoustic team of the college.

Gaurav Madani then briefed the first-years about the business fest held exclusively for the BBM dept and encouraged them to look forward to it and advised them to participate actively in the event. Neil Pinto then spoke about the cultural fests and about Kalotsav, an event which gives the students tons of opportunities to display their talent. Jason Malcus, the newly elected Cultural Secretary sang the ‘Cuppy Cake’ song which was a very sweet surprise indeed and the audience loved it. Neil, our beatboxer remixed the song into a peppier version. Joshua Selvaraj then spoke about the various sports fests in the college. He also informed them about the city’s biggest sports fest conducted by our college – Spiel.

Sourabh Salhotra gave the first-years a formal introduction on the E-news letter of college, “Synergy” that documents all the events that happen in the BBM department. The acoustic team then performed a medley to keep the students entertained throughout this programme. The Virtuoso committee took over and introduced themselves along with the theme “Tiger”. Kevin Joseph then took over the stage with an unbelievable dance performance of popping and locking to Neil’s beats. To conclude the programme, our third years arranged for an activity for the 1st years by dividing them into groups to get to know each other and break the ice! And how it did!

Orientation for First Year BBM Students

The orientation for the BBM 1st year students was held on the 6th of June 2011 in the college auditorium. It began with the gathering observing a minute of prayer. Ms. Nirmala Joseph, Head of the BBM Department addressed the gathering and provided an insight into the BBM Department of the college. She gave them information on the benefits and usefulness of the BBM course and on the variety of extra-curricular activities that are held during the academic year.

All the teachers of the Department were introduced and were greeted with loud applause by the freshers. Ms. Komal Dave then informed the now rapt audience about the various fests that are held in the college such as Straxis, the intra-college business fest and Virtuoso, the inter-college version of the same.

Allen Lall, a BBM senior, described the way these fests work and also gave a brief introduction about Kalotsav, the intra-college cultural fest which aims to bring out the ingrained talent of the participants and showers the college atmosphere with the colours of fun and gaiety.

Following that, Ms. Rency Alex talked about the corporate values one can gain by active participation in seminars, workshops and industrial visits that our college conducts on a regular basis.

Ms. Rathi David spoke about the NGO internships that the students have to do in their first year, which help them learn social values while giving them an insight into the lives of the lesser privileged in society. After this, Neethi Sen, another senior student, spoke to them about SIFE, the student-run organization that works for society and about the project they took up with the potter community last year.

This was followed by Ms. Sindhu John, the counselor, giving a few words of wisdom about how a student, during this wonderful three-year journey is vulnerable to peer pressure. She stressed the need for every student to maintain their own individuality. She cautioned the students to uphold their values and upbringing and to resist any unwarranted influences while bringing repute to themselves, their family and the institution.

To conclude the session, a video was displayed to the newcomers showcasing the industrial trips made, internships and the various social services done by the students of our college to give them a fair idea about the activities of the college and to know what to expect and anticipate. All this was received with great appreciation and enthusiastic applause by the freshers eagerly looking forward to three exciting and eventful years in this great institution.
